Art collection, bronze and stone statues, vases and valuable collectables and first edition books, Adolf Abraham Sultan, Rosa Ida “Coba” Sultan, Claere oder Klara Paula Guttsmann geb. Sultan, Paul Guttsmann, Anni Victorius, Grete Sultan
DESCRIPTION
In 1905 Richard Riemerschmid designed and built Adolf and Coba Sultan a large villa in Hubertussee Grünewald, Berlin. In addition, Riemerschmid designed and built all of the furniture and lighting for the villa, including a well-known music room for Grete Sultan and Anni Victorius to hold intimate concerts. The Sultan house was a known haven and home to artists and musicians. Adolf and Coba were also avid art and book collectors. Ludwig von Hofmann was commissioned to paint a large mural and other artwork for the house.
Max Liebermann painted a portrait of Adolf Sultan, which is currently held at the Liebermann Villa in Wannsee. In the early 90s, Allen Guttsman was informed that The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe had on display the furniture from his great grandfather’s house - the house he grew up in. This furniture was taken at the same time that their house on Ernst-ring Straße was forcibly sold with all of its contents to the NSDAP. Some of the furniture is still on display in the Museum. Adolf’s company - the Otto Dillner company, was also taken over and forced to produce items for the Wehrmacht.
Adolf and Coba’s daughter and her husband were also art collectors, often supporting then-young and little-known artists who later became well-known.
