History of loss: Léopold Dreyfus was a recognised and registered art dealer in Paris. He belonged to the ‘Syndicat National des Antiquaires Négociants en Objets d'Art Tableaux Anciens et Modernes’ from 1918 to 1942. In June 1940, Dreyfus' estate in Yrouerre par Tonnerre (Yonne) was looted by the Germans and part of his art collection was taken away in lorries. On 4 December 1945, Dreyfus drew up a list of all the stolen art objects, mainly paintings, that he had claimed.
