Tapestry, month of September, zodiac sign Libra from the series "Les mois Lucas"
The scene depicts the water mort of a stag. A sumptuously dressed lady on horseback and a couple on horseback beside her are stopped by a man armed with a spear and sword at a lake, where a man can be seen in the centre of the picture grabbing the stag, which is swimming away pursued by dogs. Men with dogs can be seen on the left and right banks and, further away, a rowing boat with several people in it. A castle with towers rises up in the distance. The landscape with forests, fields and high hills stretches from there to the left. In the foreground, to the right of the group of riders, stands a young man blowing a hunting horn in his left hand. The monogram of the artist Mathieu Monmerqué is worked into the lower right area of the floor. The cartouche in the lower border contains the zodiac sign Libra.
According to inventory of the Hofbettmeisterey 1769: 4.295 x 3.115 m (7 cubits 14 inches x 5½ cubits).
The height measurement generally given for the series as 7 cubits 14 inches, i.e. 4.295 m in the written sources, is to be regarded as ideal. It can be assumed that there were differences of at least ± 10 cm.
