Provenance

The Reichsbank Depot, Magdeburg cellar vault

Due to the war, the most valuable holdings of the monastery school library were moved to the cellar vault of the Reichsbank depot. After the end of the war, the Reichsbank depot was opened and taken away by the Red Army.

Neu Staßfurt salt mine

The majority of the monastery school library's holdings were relocated to the Neustaßfurt salt mine. It remains unclear whether the holdings were looted, burnt or taken by the US army. Today it is assumed that they were looted or burnt by foreign labourers in the mine. Some of the book collections, which are now considered missing, were burnt due to their poor state of preservation.
