Description
Painting of Augustus the Strong; the sitter in Red coat with a cuirass and blue medal ribbon underneath, medal star, white neckerchief.
Provenance
In Inventory No. 1 of 31 January 1920, as part of the 1924 settlement agreement between the Free State of Saxony and the former royal house, state property since 1918. The painting remained in the ‘Wasa Room’ of the Dresden Castle at the end of the dispute with the Wettin family association; On the list of art objects of particular value, drawn up by the head of the revenue office, the bailiff Hugo Bahr, and the castle administrator Johannes Bibrach on 6 May 1942, it says under „Thronsaal Aug. d. St.“ : „1 Gemälde“. The painting was initially brought to Pillnitz Castle along with 60 other paintings. From there, on 7 December 1943, they were brought to the relocation site, the manor house of the Rehnsdorf estate (now part of the town of Elstra in the district of Bautzen). In view of the situation, Gauleiter Martin Mutschmann ordered on 19 January 1945 that all relocation sites east of the Elbe be cleared and the salvage transferred to depots west of the Elbe. This also included the objects salvaged from the Rehnsdorf manor. The transport of 61 paintings from Rehnsdorf to Schieritz Castle took place on 26 March 1945; According to the records, they were lost at the relocation site.
