The pious hermit
In April 1938, Adalbert (Bela) Parlagi and his family emigrated from Vienna to London via Switzerland; December 7, 1938, Parlagi put his art collection into storage with the shipping company Zdenko Dworak at their warehouse located in Vienna XVIII, Gersthoferstrasse 8 & 10; the Gestapo confiscated Parlagi’s property from the warehouse and auctioned it through the Vugesta at the Dorotheum in Vienna; the painting was sold at the Dorotheum sale of February 24-27, 1942 (Lot 190, Illustration 32).
The painting last appeared on December 6, 1997, at the Lempertz auction house in Cologne where it sold (Lot 2117, Illustrated in color). Current whereabouts unknown.
