Description
A GUBBIO LUSTRED URBINO DISH, by Maestro Giorgio, with the subject of Picus and Circe ; on the left Picus on a horse pursuing a boar, behind a tree on the right Circe who became enamoured of him and changed him into a woodpecker ; in the distance a river and mountainous landscape, the reverse with a wreath of foliage in ruby and gold lustre and inscribed on the back in ruby " 1533 Mo. Giorgio da Ugubio " and in black "De Pico e Canete ", 1533
Provenance
Munich, loss 1938;
The collection (approx. 440 works) was confiscated by the SS in Munich in 1938 on the occasion of the ‘Reichskristallnacht’ and auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1939 (7/8 June and 19/20 July).
