Description
The roemer-shaped goblet has the crest of the duchy of Saxony serving as the lid finial; furthermore, the lid is decorated with three oval tablets, enamelled in black and blue, and inscribed with "Pietate", "Prudentia" and "Justitia" in gold letters; the inside of the lid bears a shield, enamelled in blue and green, with the inscription "Bei Gottesfurcht, Klugheit und Recht, Blüht treuer Herr und treuer Knecht" in black; the Saxonian coat of arms with the princely coronet (?), the multiply intertwined Initial "F" with the duke's coronet and a laurel wreath, framing the inscription "FRIDERICO DVCI SAXONIAE PRINCIPI OPTIMO ET CLEMENTISSIMO VITAM ET FELICITATEM PRECANTVR ORDINES DVCAT ALTENBVRG A. MDCLXXXVIII" in gold letters on a black background are all attached prominently on the bowl; 24 escutcheons in multicoloured enamels and black frames, topped with scrolls bearing the names of the Altenburg knightly caucus: "Seckendorff", "Wolfframsdorff`", "Bose", "Beust", "Schönberg", "Vippach", "Porzig", "Schauroth", "Meusebach", "Bünaw", "Münch", "Neidschitz", "Zehmen", "Pölnitz", "Hessler", "Schönberg", "Thünaw", "Friesen", "Einsiedel", "Zehmen", "Marschalck", "Gleichen", "Thümpling" are placed on the stem; enamelled forget-me-not blossoms are interspersed between the escutcheons; the signed escutcheons of the three districts of the principality Altenburg - "Altenburg", "Salfeld" and "Eisenberg" - are placed on the foot and connected by fruit garlands; marked with "CHRISTIAN SCHMIDT FECIT ZEITZ".
