Description

Portrait of a standing man in early 18th century dress. A portrait of a standing man in early 18th century dress with a pronounced belly in front of a column on the left and a bulging curtain; in his right hand the prince's staff; he wears his curly hair in length above his ear, his clothing consists of a long jacket with large buckles, lace sleeves, a shaped waistcoat underneath, a longer, light-coloured shirt and equally light-coloured trousers, as well as a light-coloured neckerchief; on the left breast an order star, probably the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle; on the left, closing the picture space, a massive column, on the right behind him the royal crown.

The painting corresponds to an engraving inscribed "FRIDERICUS WILHEMUS/ Rex Borussiæ Elector Brandenburg: &c etc." by Johann Georg Mentzel (* 1677, † 1743).

It is a variant of a type of portrait of the Soldier King introduced by Antoine Pesne.
