Description
A mountain landscape with ruins under a bright evening sky; on the left, in front of a rock, the Rest on the Flight into Egypt: Mary with the infant Jesus sits next to the donkey while Joseph leans on his walking stick on the left; above them, angels float on a cloudlet; a clay flask and a waterskin lie in the foreground; the landscape is fine and hazy, with the colours having a porcelain-like quality.
Provenance
From the collection of duke Ernest II of Saxe Gotha-Altenburg (cf. 1826 inventory). Probably for sale; a painting of almost the same size (20 x 26.4 cm) by van Haensbergen (or attributed to Cornelis van Poelenburch), formerly in the gallery of Hans Bammann in Düsseldorf, had been offered for auction at Sotheby's in Amsterdam (lot. 56) on May 10, 2011 (no knockdown). Most likely it was the Gotha painting.
