Bernheim Jeune; Hotel des Ventes (Paris); Alfred Lindon collection, acquired from above; looted on 5 Dec, 1940, from Chase Safe Deposit Company, 41, rue Cambon, Paris; transferred on 10 Dec, 1940, to Jeu de Paume; sent by Rochlitz to Goering from Paris to Baden-Baden in June 1944 and from there it was lost. On May 5 , 1941 the art dealer Gustav Rochlitz exchanged three ‘degenerate’ paintings by Matisse and Renoir for a painting of the School of Fontainebleau. The Matisse and one of the Renoirs belonged to Alfred Lindenbaum. There is no record as to whom the other Renoir belonged. Possibly bought by Feilchenfeldt on the French market around 1984; sold at Sotheby's London, 5 Feb 2002, lot 17
