Description
The picture shows the verses in the handed down the story of the meeting of Jesus with his disciples (Gospel of St. John, chap. 20). The "disbelieving Thomas" (to the right of Jesus) is asked to put his hands in the wounds of the crucifixion.
Provenance
Peter Rittig, circa 1826 Garnisionskirche Potsdam; Around 1820 to 1940 Evangelical apostles-church community of Münster. The painting by Peter Rittig was begun around 1820 in the course of the renovation of the ev. Apostelkirchengemeinde Münster by K.F. Schinkel from the Garnisonskirche Potsdam. In Münster it was set up on the main altar. The painting disappeared after 1940, after the church was hit by bombs.(Peter Rittig was commissioned to create a replacement painting with the same subject after 1830, painted 1839. This was also lost after the war, and was rediscovered in Potsdam in the year 2000.)
