The library's entire main collection was moved to Count Stolberg's castle in Wernigerode in 1943/1944. From there, all 150,000-200,000 books were transported via Berlin to Leningrad in 1946 at the instigation of the Soviet military administration. The same applies to parts that were found in Shaft IV in Staßfurt and in other relocation sites. In 1946/1950 they were distributed with many other libraries to scientific institutions in the Soviet Union, for example to Moscow, Tomsk and also to Tbilisi.
