Lost Art-ID
631733
Name
Böttger stoneware and Böttger porcelain
Description
37 pieces of Böttger stoneware and 25 pieces of Böttger porcelain; see illustration in Ernst Zimmermann, Die Erfindung und Frühzeit des Meißner Porzellans (The Invention and Early History of Meissen Porcelain). Berlin 1908 – possibly ‘Johanneum numbers’ or castle inventory numbers.
History
History of loss: The porcelain collection, together with carpets, furnishings from the porcelain gallery, and scientific material (10 crates), was moved to 16 different locations in a total of 1,211 crates. The storage locations, some of which were castles and manor houses, served as refugee shelters after 1945. Since part of the collection was later offered for sale by private individuals or found in private estates, it is assumed that some of the losses are due to looting and destruction. According to the 1991 loss report for the porcelain collection, partial transport to the Soviet Union cannot be ruled out.
