Description
Writing box made of olive wood. There are two carvings on the lid: the left-hand image shows the Western Wall in Jerusalem, while the right-hand image depicts Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem. The Hebrew names of the two buildings are inscribed beneath the carvings. In addition, the word ‘Jerusalem’ is written in both Hebrew and Latin letters.
Provenance
The object was donated to the museum in 2011 by a private individual from Hamm. It was found in a kitchen cupboard that the grandparents of this private individual had received from a furniture warehouse in the city of Hamm between 1942 and 1945. The furniture stored there came from the confiscated households of Hamm's Jewish population and was distributed to bombed-out families via the municipal welfare office. Due to a lack of records, the rightful owner cannot be identified at this time.
