Portrait of Moses

The lines of the portrait of Moses contain the 5th Book of Moses in Hebrew letters. On the reverse there is a handwritten provenance note by Otto Rink, director of the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum from 1940-1945, chairman of the Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst und vaterländische Altertümer 1945-1947, which states that:

„Das Bild des Moses aus hebräischen Buchstaben enthält das 5. Buch Moses!

Dies Blatt wurde mir persönlich anläßlich des großen Ankaufs von Antiquitäten aus jüdischem Besitz (als alle Juden bis auf die ganz alten – über 60 Jahre – Ostfriesland bis zum 1. Mai 1940 verlassen mussten) von dem Juden Stein, äußere Boltentorstraße, Westseite, geschenkt. Ich übergebe es der „Kunst“. Emden, 1. August 1940. Otto Rink.“

The Prophet Moses is depicted with the tablet of the law and the corresponding staff as a three-quarter portrait. As already mentioned, all lines consist of tiny Hebrew bush letters that reproduce the 5th Book of Moses (Sepher Devarim). In the lower area is a panel with the English-French title "Portrait of/de Moïse" and inscriptions in 4 languages (Hebrew, Emglish, French and German): "Lawgiver to the Israelites, and the greatest of the prophets, (containing the fifth book) written in small type by H.B. [Hilel Braverman]".
