Oak forest with water and figures
Forest landscape with a river running through it. Two people can be seen in the centre of the riverbank. While the right side of the picture is taken up by trees, the cloudy sky shines out blue in places in the upper left.
The work is signed "B. C. Koekkoek" at lower left, but not dated. Despite the presence of the signature, the painting does not appear to be an original by the artist.
The following indications can be taken from the reverse: white label with perforated border in blue "2929/1119" (Linz no.); in pencil "2" (unidentified); "6266" (unidentified); label, in blue bold crayon "2281/1" (Mü no.), below in typescript "Koekoek, Barend Cornelius / geb. 1803 in Middelbourg / gest. 1862 in Cleve / Beruehmter Landschafter, arbeitete / speziel für den hol. Koenig. / Seine Werke befinden sich in allen / bedeutenden Museen (nicht identifiziert); in yellow "17" (not identified); blue bordered label "[...]885" (not identified); white label, attached with drawing pin "2281/1 (2929)" (Mü-Nr., Linz-Nr.); label "295" (not identified); in white "394" (not identified); white label "(1) Mü. No: 2281/1 / Koekoek, Barend / Eichenwald mit Wasser und Staffage / Holz, 43,5 x 52,5 cm / Schätzwert: 3.000,- DM" (not identified); in black, three times "K1486" (Kremsmünster); fragment of a yellowed label [not legible].
The painting is not included in Gorissen's catalogue raisonné (1962).
