The Städtische Galerie Stuttgart acquired the painting in 1940 from the Stuttgart art dealer Otto Greiner. The provenance of the painting between 1909 and its sale in 1940 is unknown. Otto Greiner was one of the most important art dealers in Stuttgart between 1933 and 1945. He was a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts, specialist group for art publishers and art dealers. He worked as an art expert for the National Socialists and bought works of art from Jewish collectors who were forced to flee Germany.
