Description
Description on the inventory card: 162nd / NORTH GERMANY (?) / LIDDING POCAL WITH FLAT CUT AND MATCH FLOOR, END 17th ANNIVERSARY / glass / height 42,5 cm / inv. no. 1952/45 / Very popular were glass goblets with heraldic motifs and monograms in the baroque period. This lidded goblet shows a direct reference to the country. The wall of the cup is decorated with Stormarn's large heraldic swan and five small coats of arms for Norway, Dithmarschen, Holstein, Oldenburg and Schleswig. The mirror monogram under the crown on the pedestal refers to Duke Friedrich IV of Schleswig-Holstein- Gottorf (reigned 1694 - 1702). Base and lid are decorated with tendrils, flowers and fruits / The glass cut of this lidded goblet was probably made by a local glassworks at the end of the 17th century. In contrast to the 17th century, there is no evidence for the occurrence of glass cutting in Schleswig-Holstein in the 18th century. Cut glass was obtained from outside the region, for example from Potsdam, from glassworks in Bohemia or Saxony or even from Norway.
