Description
Signed in the plate, dated lower left: Stauffer-Bern 87; inscribed below: Conrad Ferdinand Meyer von Zurich; printed below, lower left: Karl Stauffer-Bern fecit; below centre: O. Felsing, Berlin impr.; below right: Amsler & Ruthardt, Berlin W.
Provenance
26.06.1942 purchased from the art antiquarian Reinhold Puppel, formerly Hollstein & Puppel, Berlin; the art antiquarian was Aryanised in 1936 by the part-owner Puppel. Hollstein, who was Jewish and married and had been banned from the profession, emigrated to Holland in 1937; the sheet was purchased after the Aryanisation of the art shop. It is not known when and from whom the art shop acquired it. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that the print belongs to the old stock of Hollstein & Puppel.
