History
Lost in 1945, Halle (Saale), Reichsbank branch. Towards the end of the war, the numismatic objects were stored in three boxes in the rooms of the savings bank in Rathausstrasse. Among the items lost was the golden locket from 1560. In April 1945, US troops moved in. Approximately 617 coins and medals, mainly from the Heynemann Foundation, were taken from the crates for transport to the USA. The confiscated objects were handed over from the savings bank to the Reichsbank in Halle between 19 June 1945 and 1 July 1945, but then the city was handed over to the Red Army on 1 July 1945. The city administration asked the Soviet military commander for their release as early as 2 August 1945. In accordance with General Zhukov's Order No. 11, which stipulated that all gold and silver coins were to be handed over, the numismatic items were used for reparations payments. In the winter of 1946, city archivist Erich Neuß recovered the remains of the relocated coin and medal collection from the savings bank and found 3,009 coins, 266 medals and 52 replicas of ancient coins in the broken crates (see catalogue Deutsche Kunstmedaillen des 20. Jahrhunderts [German Art Medals of the 20th Century], 1996, page 26f).
