La Rodogune de Pierre Corneille
From the first episode »Scènes de Tragédie« to the series »Les scènes d'Opera, de Tragédie et de Comédie«. From the tragedy and 1844 verses, composed by Pierre Corneille, the oval image field of the carpet contains the last scene of the play first performed in 1644 or 1645. The content goes back to the Roman historian Appian of Alexandria. The scene takes place in a palace with columns, a pedestal and a throne chair. In the middle of the scene appears the title figure, the Parthian princess Rodogune, seeking protection at Antiochus. Both look to the right edge of the picture, where the Syrian queen Cleopatra empties the bowl of poison that she had set off from jealousy after failed intrigues for Rodogune. The inscription in the pedestal field under the image contains the description of the scene: "LA RODOGUNE DE P.CORNEILLE ACTE V SCENE DERNIERE" Signature: "AUDRAN .F."
