Description

The depiction shows young people having fun ice skating in December. Young couples in the foreground are watching the action on the ice. Their expensive clothing shows that they come from a noble family. The skaters, on the other hand, belong to the lower classes and the rural population. They flock to the fun from afar. Beyond the water, a castle-like building looms in the background, with other buildings on either side, bare trees in front of it and pale hills behind it. The monogram of the artist Mathieu Monmerqué is worked into the lower right. The name is incomplete, the two final letters ué are missing. They are possibly covered by the shell motif of the corner cartouche to the right. The cartouche in the lower border contains the zodiac sign Capricorn. The signature MONMERQ(...) is visible in the preserved photo.

According to the inventory of the Hofbettmeisterey 1769: height 4.295 x width 3.965 m (7 cubits 14 inches x 7 cubits). The height measurement given in the written sources for the series as generally 7 cubits 14 inches, i.e. 4.295 m, is to be regarded as ideal. It can be assumed that there were differences of at least ± 10 cm.

Provenance
Until 1942 in Dresden Castle, Small Dining Hall, east wing 2nd floor; in mid-1942 the tapestries (23 pieces in total, including the tapestry named here) were stretched on 8 rolls in the Residenzschloss and transported to the vaulted first floor rooms of the Residenzschloss. In September/October 1942, the rolls were moved to the Green Vault (Fireplace, Jewel and Bronze Rooms); on August 16/17, 1943, the 8 tapestry rolls were transported to Schleinitz Palace, as an inspection on June 8, 1943 led to the conclusion that the rooms in the Green Vault were not sufficiently protected against bombing; A loss in connection with the events of WWII cannot be ruled out (according to the files, loss at the relocation site).
