Description

The motif shows the grape harvest in October with an exuberant rural party. In the lower left corner, a couple is sitting on the ground drinking wine. An older woman behind the couple on the left brings fruit in a bowl and in her apron. To the right of the group is a small table with a basket full of grapes, two children are sitting on the floor next to it and eating the grapes. In the centre of the depiction, a young man embraces a girl with a basket next to him. The couple are backed by an arbour entwined with vines. At the edge on the right, two men are treading the mash for the wine in a large wooden trough, while women are carrying the grapes in baskets. In the background, men and women dance in a circle, accompanied by three musicians playing a pipe, a bagpipe and a drum. In the distance, on the left, seen through the pergola, a portico becomes visible, while fields, trees and hills can be seen on the right. The cartouche in the lower border contains the zodiac sign Scorpio.

According to inventory of the Hofbettmeisterey 1769: height: 4.295 m (7 cubits 14 inches), width not recorded, is assumed to be 3.115 m.

The height generally given for the series as 7 cubits 14 inches, i.e. 4.295 m, in the written sources is to be regarded as ideal. It can be assumed that there were differences of at least ± 10 cm.

Provenance
Until 1942 in Dresden Castle, Imperial Salon (Tapestry Hall), Bärengarten wing 2nd floor; in mid-1942 the tapestries (23 in total, including the tapestry named here) were stretched on 8 rolls in the and thus transported to the vaulted first floor rooms of the Dresden Castle; In September/October 1942, the rolls were moved to the Green Vault (Fireplace, Jewel and Bronze Rooms); On August 16/17, 1943, the 8 tapestry rolls were transported to Schleinitz Palace, as an inspection on June 8, 1943 led to the conclusion that the rooms in the Green Vault were not sufficiently protected against bombing; A loss in connection with the events of WWII cannot be ruled out (according to the files, loss at the relocation site).
