Provenance
Originally belonged to claimant's grandparents, who resided at Wasserburgerstrasse 6, Munich, Germany. Some time in 1938 they were forced out of their house and into the Hotel Continental, a collecting point for Jews (exact circumstances of theft not known). According to a letter of March 2, 1942 from Der Oberfinanzpraesident, Muenchen, their artworks, along with the art of several other Jews, passed through the Staatlichen Gemäldesammlungen in München and the Städtische Galerie in München before making their way into the hands of the Münchener Kunsthandelsgesellschaft, where they were ostensibly stored. Claimant's grandparents were deported on November 20, 1941, taken off the train and shot near Kaunus, Lithuania. All of the other paintings in their collection were returned to their daughter (claimant's mother), from the Allied collecting point. Munich (München). Germany.
