Description
A LARGE URBINO ARMORIAL DISH, perhaps by Guido Durantino, superbly painted in rich colours with a battle scene in the foreground, trees to the left and buildings and temples on the right with a mountainous landscape in the distance and at the top a coat-of-arms, a lion rampant on a reddy-brown shield, the subject inspired by the battles of Philip, King of Macedonia, the underside of the dish with yellow rim, inscribed in blue "II Re philippo et li Achej conbatetero co Romani etoli et il re fugi per el sconfitto, (sic) " circa 1540
Provenance
Munich, loss 1938;
The collection (approx. 440 works) was confiscated by the SS in Munich in 1938 on the occasion of the ‘Reichskristallnacht’ and auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1939 (7/8 June and 19/20 July).
