1905 gift of the heirs of the commercial councillor Albert Arons in Berlin; lost in 1945 in the flak tower Friedrichshain; offered in 1956 from Polish property of the art dealer Änne Abels in Düsseldorf; turned up in 2005 at Sotheby's in London; returned to the National Gallery in 2006
