The Magdeburg City Archives lost significant holdings from the 15th to the early 20th century
The main storage location was Shaft 6, Ridge 18 of the Neustaßfurt salt mine. According to reports from the document collection ‘Die Trophäenkommissionen der Roten Armee’ (‘The Red Army's Trophy Commissions’), the holdings that were transported ‘from the mines around Magdeburg’ to Berlin and on to the Soviet Union in 1946 also included holdings from the ‘storage site in pit no. 6-7 Atzendorf’, including the city archive with around 500 boxes. On the list of places where the selection and export of cultural assets was to be checked for 1946, pit no. 6-7 Atzendorf is listed, so that Magdeburg city archives may have reached the Soviet Union via this route (p. 121).
