Provenance
History of loss: Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, March 1945-03 to October. Allegedly destroyed during the war. Officially, the accusation that French and American army personnel could have stolen the objects from the depot at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was never investigated. The suspicion that at least some of the objects were taken to France and the USA is confirmed by two events: The Madonna from the ‘Carinthian Annunciation’ (inventory P 937) was acquired in France by O. Wertheimer in 1948. He returned the sculpture to the Middle Rhine Museum. And the Lucas van Leyden painting ‘Feeding the multitude’, winged altarpiece (inventory M 1968/67) appeared at a Sotheby's auction in 1968. The consignor was represented by American lawyers. The museum eventually regained possession of the painting; Responsible: French/American (?/?); Organisation: French/US. (?/?) ; Organisation: Military administration.
