Description
Half-bark base, sides and scroll made of evenly medium-width flamed maple; symmetrically joined spruce top with medium-width, regular annual rings. Two knots on the right wing. Gentle, full arch with wide, flat moulding; narrow edge, rather flat on the top, with long corners. Large scroll with high forehead, slightly undercut; edges narrow and sharp. ff holes cut in the style of Stradivari. Dark inlay of wider ebony chips, corners tapering to short points. Very transparent, bright yellow-orange varnish on a golden yellow ground, well preserved. All essential parts belong together; the fingerboard is glued on. Side joint at the lower block with inlaid chip and recessed lower saddle.
Provenance
March 1941 – Acquisition
The Camilli violin is purchased for 12,000 Reichsmarks from the Hamma & Co. workshop in Stuttgart. The buyer is the RMVP. The provenance of the violin for the period between 1933 and 1945 has not been conclusively clarified.
There are substantial gaps in the provenance prior to the documented purchase by Fridolin Hamma in 1941. The dealer Hamma is documented as a strategic partner of the Reich Ministry of Propaganda.
