The violin is marked Nicolaus Gagliano, Naples 1714. An assessment of the provenance in terms of risk evaluation is only possible to a limited extent at this point in time. Although the RMVP's acquisition of the violin in March 1941 is documented, there is considerable uncertainty regarding the instrument's provenance prior to this date. Jewish ownership can neither be confirmed nor ruled out.
