Description
Recto on passepartout in pencil: "Interessantes Flugblatt auf America. 16 Jahrh.", “Phil Galle.”, inv. no. “VI b/52/892”; recto: on plate: lower right: "Ioan. Stradanus invent., Phls Galle excud."; verso: lower left in pencil “50032/pa”, centre right watermark.
Provenance
30.10.1952: acquired from the art antiquarian Reinhold Puppel, Quedlinburg (formerly Hollstein & Puppel, Berlin). It is not known when and from whom Reinhold Puppel acquired the print. It cannot be ruled out that the print belonged to the old stock of the aryanised art shop Hollstein & Puppel. Reinhold Puppel deliberately traded in cultural property that had been confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution.
