"In meinem Hause dulde ich keine Kunst! Sie macht nur Löcher in die Wände."
The caricature, created during Heine's exile in Brno, shows three figures in a suggested living room. A male figure in the centre is hanging a framed picture on the wall. Other pictures are leaning against the wall on the floor. On the left, a lady is sitting on a sofa with a hammer on her lap and a folding rule in her hand. On the right, the master of the house stands and points with a raised finger to the picture hooks and the chipped plaster. The sheet is labelled with the caption in German and Czech on the recto. There are numerous inscriptions on the verso, such as Heine's address in Brno (‘Th Th Heine/ Brno/ Neumannova 10/ 21 VII 37’), a note in Czech about an appointment, as well as the number 255 (probably the consignor's number at Hauswedell & Nolte, Hamburg).
