Description
Steppe-like landscape (Asia Minor, Libyssa (Bithynia)) with a group of trees consisting of two cypresses and a herd of goats and a herdsman.
The Carthaginian commander and statesman Hannibal ended his life in 183 BC to avoid extradition to the Romans. The artist Eugen Bracht was inspired for his motif by a literary model by the historian and archaeologist Julius Braun (Julius Braun: Historische Landschaften. Chapter V : Hannibal. Stuttgart 1867, p. 330). Bracht worked on the motif in a total of 18 versions. This variant from 1921 is the 18th and last version. It goes back to the original version.
